Newtyle Beat Season Review 2010
Newtyle Beat Season Review 2010.
With opening day upon us we were greeted by loads of snow on the ground and sleet in the air, a tad cold but nothing a nice dram wouldn’t cure! Ms Anne Woodcock and Ms Sarah Iveson of Ladies Fishing were giving the honour of opening the beat for the 2010 season. The 1st kelt was landed by Mr Stuart Lang. Mr Sean McGarry had a fresh finnoch on the fly from the Dean’s Burn.
January was a very productive month for the week, the low cold water level seemed to have slowed the fish up with us, with fish been seen in the beat. Our 1st Springer of the season was landed on the 18th by Mr Tom Monaghan from the Cotter. Mr Rory Campbell had the beats 1st fly caught Springer on the 20th taken from the Boil on an Eternal Optimist. Mr Peter Meek caught the biggest Springer of the month with a lovely 16lber taken from the cotter on the fly. We finished the month with 5 Springer’s, two of which were caught on the fly.
February got off to a great start with Mr Craig Binnie landing a superb 30lb sea liced Springer on a salmo from steps. We had a 8lber on the fly on the 5th but after the water level dropped away to 0” on the gauge and fishing was slow, still kelts getting caught but nothing fresh. We finished the month with 2 Springer’s.
March is normally the month where things normally pick up and the first big runs of Springer’s start to appear and this was the case again, we caught fish consistently throughout the month. The first spate of the season came on the 15th march and this brought a good run of Springer’s with it. Mr Allan Rennie had a superb 17.5lb Springer on the fly on the 17th. On the 29th we had a great day landing 4 Springer’s and losing a couple to. Mr Allan Rennie landing 3 of these. We finished the month with 13 Springer’s.
April is the prime month for middle Tay Springer action and with a good end to March we were expecting the fish to keep coming. For the first two days we landed 4 Springer’s with two been taken on the fly, the 4th one of these was a belter of 30lb 2oz taken by Mr Kenny Carr on the fly from the Cotter. There was a huge spate on the 6th that lost us a couple of days but once it ran off we were back amongst the fish. Mr Allan Rennie had two on the 12th 9lb Licer & 15.5lb Licer. Young Max Renouf landed his 1st ever salmon of 8.5lbs. Towards the end of the month be landed a couple of good fish of 18lbs and 19lbs. On the 28th former Tay Ghillie Malcolm Steele landed 3 Springer’s on the fly from the Cotter. We finished the month with 18 Springer’s.
May was a tad disappointing after what has been a good spring so far, our first fish for May wasn’t landed until the 10th. Fishing remained very sporadic during the month with a day of 5 saving the months catches. Ms Sarah Iveson landed her 1st salmon on the 31st as part of Ladies Fishing’s Casting For Recovery Charity Days. We landed 10 Springer’s for the month.
June was an interesting month with the river remaining at summer low for most of the month, the quality of fish we were catching were mainly small salmon with the odd grilse. There were quite a few Sea Trout around now as well and some good catches were been made. A couple of good fish were landed during the month with Mr Peter Dobson landing a 12lb fish from the boil on the fly and Mr Allan Rennie landing a 16lber from the Island. Mr Billy Davidson landed the 50th fish on the season on the 11th, a sea liced 11lber taken from the Trap. We finished the month with 10 fish.
July saw a rise in the water and the Grilse arrived in good numbers, Sport was steady throughout the month with the fly doing very well. Most of the fish landed were in the 4lb-9lb class with most liced/fresh, we also landed some good sea trout the the 5-6lb mark. We finished the month with 17 fish.
August proved to be an interesting month for the Tay, the grilse run was getting stronger by the day and the bigger summer fish started to appear too. The fly done very well during the month, Mr Davie Allison landed his 1st Newtyle salmon, followed by his 2nd 10 minutes later. We landed a 15lb sea liced salmon from the Trap on the 21st followed by a 10lber from the Boil the same day. The 100th fish of the season was landed on the 26th from the Boil on a X Rap. We finished the month with 29 fish.
September got off to a great start with Mr Donnie Whiteford landed a 20lb salmon from the trap on the fly on the 1st, as the month went on the bigger fish started to appear. On the 13th we hooked 15 fish landing 4 up to 18lbs. On the 18th Bobby Williamson fishing with Mr Paul Young landed a 6lber from the Ferry Pool. On the 23rd and the 30th we landed 6 salmon each day with some been lost as well, notably Mr Sam Burgoyne had 4 to his own rod on the 30th. We finished the month with 37 fish.
October proved to be as productive as was anticipated after the September catches and we caught fish regularly from the 1st. On the 2nd we landed 4 salmon with Mr Mark Lyndsey landing his 1st salmon of 15.5lbs and a toby, Mr William Ballingall also had his 1st ever salmon a long tailed sea licer of 10lbs. Mr Mark Shipwright landed his 1st salmon of 8lbs on the 5th. Ms Valerie Robertson landed a 18lber on the 6th fishing with the McGee Party. On the 7th we landed 5 fish up to 16lbs mostly sea liced. On the 9th Mr David Brattesani landed his 1st Newtyle salmon on the fly from the Cotter. The Lane party had a good 3 days landing 7 salmon up to 19lbs, On the 14th we landed 5 salmon up to 15lbs in weight, this included a 1st fly caught salmon for Ms Anne Woodcock. The last day proved to be a good fun day and a lot of salmon in the pools, Mr Paul McGeoch landed an 18lb salmon from the Boil on the fly. We finished October with 31 fish for the 2 weeks.
Over all we landed 172 salmon for the season with 165 been released. I’d like to thank all our rods for making this stat possible and look forward to welcoming you all back to the beat during the 2011 season.
